That iron self-control has been called upon recently as she copes with the aftermath of the most disastrous off-court match of her life.
On Thursday, at Wimbledon, she found herself in the same place at the same time as her ex-husband, Greg Norman, who came with his new wife, Karen, on his arm.
By 2008, Evert and Norman were married — but they were divorced in Key West less than two years later.
“I didn’t know this when I got divorced (from Evert), but I ended up happier than Chris, or Greg for that matter,” Andy told me when Evert married Norman. We go hiking, we go bow-hunting, we go fishing, we go camping.
She and Norman had already started what she insists was a platonic affair.
Evert and Norman’s union seemed doomed from the start. His priority was to build his business and travel.” She says after her marriage to Norman failed she thought about the hurt and the pain she had caused Mill, whom she described as “my husband and best friend and soulmate”.

Aged 56, she looks terrific in jeans and a T-shirt, an idealised vision of the all-American middle-aged mother with three teenage sons whom she adores.
“My conscience and my guilt and my grief kicked in,” she said.
Andy claimed his marriage to Debra, 43, is “irretrievably” broken.
The two, who have no children together, had an iron-clad prenuptial agreement that the judge ordered Andy and Debra to follow.
